Since opening, the Taichung City Tun District Art Center has accompanied the public for 17 years. In order to provide a higher quality and safer performance environment, the Taichung City Government has allocated nearly NT$20 million from its own budget for 2026 and 2027 to launch an improvement project for the auditorium’s roof structure reinforcement and rigging system automation. Construction is scheduled to begin in September this year, with upgrades to be carried out gradually over two years. In addition to strengthening the safety of the roof structure and improving workplace safety for stage crews, this upgrade will also renew 12 sets of digital stage rigging systems, increasing operating speed tenfold and raising the safe load capacity to 500 kilograms, thereby providing performing arts groups with a more professional and safer stage environment.

Chia-Chun Chen, Director of the Cultural Affairs Bureau of Taichung City Government, stated that the auditorium of the Tun District Art Center is not only open to applications for all kinds of performances, but also actively plans its own programs, including the Parent Child Arts Festival, Summer Arts and Laughter, and the Tech x Art Experimental Theater, which applies new theater technologies. With nearly one hundred performances presented each year, the Center’s diverse and high quality programs have been widely praised by the public. However, as modern performing arts continue to evolve, theaters are facing increasing demands in areas such as stage effects, scene change speed, and the application of digital technology. After more than 17 years of use, the auditorium’s roof and rigging system now face not only potential safety concerns, but also functional limitations in meeting the diverse needs of today’s performing groups.

Director Chen further noted that the Taichung City Government has budgeted NT$10.55 million for 2026 and NT$9 million for 2027, with construction scheduled from September to November this year and next. In addition to improving the structural safety of the auditorium roof at the Tun District Art Center and providing a safer working environment for the behind the scenes heroes of the stage, the project will also introduce a digital control system to upgrade 12 stage battens. This will increase operating speed tenfold and double load capacity to 500 kilograms. The digital control console will also offer greater safety and convenience in operation and will be better equipped to handle large set changes and the suspension of complex lighting equipment, meeting the professional demands of the modern theater. The city hopes this will inject new momentum into the arts environment of central Taiwan and provide the public with higher quality performance services.

The Taichung City Tun District Art Center added that, once the roof structure reinforcement and rigging system automation project is completed at the end of 2027, it will become another professional performance venue under the Cultural Affairs Bureau of Taichung City Government to adopt a digital rigging system, following Chung Shan Hall and the Huludun Cultural Center. In addition to reducing the operational burden on theater technicians and lowering occupational safety risks, the Center also hopes to attract more outstanding productions, including performances that incorporate technology based art. In doing so, it aims to reinforce its development goal of becoming a Tech x Art base, continue drawing audiences into arts venues, and invite them to experience the unique charm of the performing arts.
